Getting eyelash extensions is a great way to make your eyelashes look instantly more fabulous. Many women who get lash extensions donโt see the point of wearing mascara anymore and feel they need less makeup around their eyes.
Although your mink lashes look beautiful, eyelash extensions are not permanent. They should last between 6 and 8 weeks, and you will eventually need to get new extensions to replace the ones that have fallen off. If you want to make the most of your investment, learn how to take care of your eyelash extensions so they will last longer.
Be sure to follow these nine tips.
1. Avoid water after getting your eyelash extensions
After getting your gorgeous eyelash extensions, you must avoid water for 48 hours.
This is because the glue used to attach the extensions to your natural lashes is still curing. If it comes in contact with water, it will cure without forming a strong bond with your lashes.
So avoid taking a shower, washing your face, and spending time in the rain.
2. Avoid using oil-based products
Taking care of eyelash extensions is mostly about being careful not to damage their adhesive. Therefore, avoid using oil-based products around your eyes, as oil can dissolve the glue.
Make sure you use oil-free makeup, makeup remover, and eye cream. To remove eye makeup, choose a gel-based remover or water-based micellar water.
3. Donโt use waterproof eye makeup
If you love waterproof eye makeup and mascara, itโs best not to use these products while you have eyelash extensions.
Waterproof makeup usually needs to be removed with oil-based makeup remover, and as we have just discussed, you need to avoid oil-based products. Consider not wearing any eye makeup at all.
However, if you insist on wearing eye makeup, choose products which are not waterproof and can be removed with a gentle, water-based cleanser.
4. Donโt try to curl your extensions with a mechanical curler
Not everyone wants eyelash extensions that look very dramatic. If your extensions look more natural, you might want to curl them once in a while to give them extra oomph.
However, donโt use a mechanical curler if you want to do that. It could pull on your extensions and remove them. If they stay in place, they could end up with an awkward bend that will not go away.
If you want to curl your eyelash extensions, use a heated curler instead.
5. Donโt touch your extensions or rub your eyes
Avoid touching your eyelash extensions. If you constantly pick or pull at your lashes, you could also pull out your extensions and damage your natural lashes.
If you have a habit of rubbing your eyes when you are tired, do your best to avoid it. Friction simply isnโt good for eyelash extensions and will make them fall off sooner than they should.
6. Brush your eyelash extensions regularly
Brushing your extensions once in a while will help keep them clean. It will also make them appear fluffier.
A mascara wand would make a perfect brush for your eyelash extensions. If you have just emptied a tube of mascara, wash off the wand and let it dry. You can then use it to comb through your eyelash extensions when necessary.
7. Clean your extensions with a gentle cleanser
Eyelash extensions trap debris, dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria. You donโt want any of this to stay close to your eyes.
Brushing your extensions will help keep them clean, but you should also regularly clean them with a gentle cleanser.
You can use a gentle, eye-safe cleanser if you donโt have a cleanser formulated especially for eyelash extensions. Just remember not to rub your extensions too vigorously.
8. Donโt stand under a powerful shower jet
Does your shower have a powerful shower head? Avoid exposing your face to a strong shower jet, as the pressure from the hot water could be enough to rip out your extensions.
When you take a shower, itโs safer to wash your face by cupping water in your hands instead of letting it flow down your face.
9. Consider using a silk or satin pillowcase
Finally, you can take care of your eyelash extensions while you sleep at night simply by using a silk or satin pillowcase.
These are considered better for your hair and skin than cotton pillowcases, but they are also more gentle on eyelash extensions. If your face rubs on your pillow while you sleep, your extensions will likely stay in place if they touch a silky fabric.
As you can see, taking care of your new lashes is not that difficult. Remember to avoid water for the first 48 hours and avoid oil-based products and friction.
